Sidsel Meineche Hansen

The double solo exhibition ONE-self by Sidsel Meineche Hansen (*1981 in Ry, Denmark, lives and works in London) was shown this year simultaneously at the Temporary Gallery in Cologne and at the Künstlerhaus Bremen. In the works created for this occasion, the Danish artist continued her exploration of the role of the psychopharmaceutical industry as a producer of subjectivity.

The edition for the Künstlerhaus Bremen focuses on a staff of Aesculapius, a symbol of medicine and the pharmaceutical industry. It is framed by symbols such as the dollar sign and the command symbol of the computer keyboard. The image reflects an “emotional-industrial complex” that results from the intimate relationship between the psychotropic drug industry and capitalism. As in her other woodcuts, a drawing was digitally milled into wood by lasercut and then printed on paper. Her decision to combine wood as an organic model with an applied digital technique ties in with her investigation of the interlocking of organic and computer-controlled mechanisms.
