Elín Hansdóttir
The edition by the Icelandic artist Elín Hansdóttir captures the view of architecture. It seems to be a lightning shot of a brief moment in limbo, in uncertainty. Only dimly we recognize the shaft of a tower, its top disappearing completely in the fog. Or is it a smoking chimney? This edition exemplifies what is characteristic of Hansdóttir’s work: it revolves around confusion, the manipulation of the senses and the accompanying deception of perception. In her installations as well as in this photograph, she creates strange environments by means of altered and reduced lighting conditions. The architectural system within which we usually move is manipulated and the reliable constants are taken away from us. Thus Elín Hansdóttir subtly shifts the spatial structure by means of dissolved contours, causing feelings of irritation, uncertainty and disorientation.
