Jonathan Monk

A rope circle made of natural-colored hemp, similar to a ship’s rope– both ends invisibly interwoven, 1.88 m in diameter, corresponding to the artist’s exact arm span. The rope, which can be designed in any shape, comes in two packages: one wrapped in the original bag from the ropemakers, and the other glued, sealed and protected in a simple paper box with a certificate. The Inside of Something and The Outside of Something Stopped from Falling Over the Edge of Something Else– a puzzle and edition in one. A piece which not only involuntarily evokes associations with Leonardo da Vinci’s uomo vitruviano, but also with Marcel Duchamp’s Ready-Mades of the 1920s. While Jonathan Monk (*1969 in Leicester, lives in Berlin) has taken up Minimal and Concept Art of the 1960s and 1970s in previous works, this work is a winked attempt to link Hanseatic history with older art history.
