Sofia Hultén – Mutual Annihilation
24 May – 31 August 2008
Opening: Friday, 23 May 2008, 7.30 p.m.
Welcoming speech: Waltraut Steimke, Executive Director
Introduction: Stefanie Böttcher, Artistic Director
Destruction and creation, order and chaos are concepts which aptly characterise the work of Sofia Hultén. On the basis of a previously conceived theme, the Swedish artist explores the nature, the materiality of objects through her artistic actions, disassembling things as systematically as she integrates the pieces into new contexts. Material features and functions are examined and sculpturally investigated in terms of the value we attach to them as utility items. The outcome of these artistic interventions are videos, photographs or the objects themselves in a re-worked state. For her exhibition at the Künstlerhaus Bremen, Sofia Hultén will produce a multi-part work which subverts the cyclical process of genesis, change and decline. Her reversal of causal processes tantalizes our framework of order and consistency. Mutual Annihilation begins where it ends, moving simultaneously forwards and backwards without stopping.
On the occasion of the exhibition Mutual Annihilation, a two-language catalogue will be published in collaboration with the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, documenting Sofia Hultén´s work since the year 2001.
