Pablo Pijnappel - Homer

28 July – 7 October 2007
Opening: Friday, 27 July 2007, 7.30 p.m.

Welcoming speech: Waltraut Steimke, executive director
Introduction: Stefanie Böttcher, artistic director

With Reference to his own family history and the nomadic life of his forefathers, Pablo Pijnappel weaves a complex mesh of relationships in his works in which he then involves the viewer. His grandfather emigrated from the Netherlands via England and France to Brazil where he finally settled, and from where Pablo Pijnappel later returned to the Netherlands.
Pijnappel works revolve around the issue of roots, the search for identity, for which he finds ever new and subtle forms expressed at different levels and in different media. Because the artist links his own images with pictures from his family archive or sequences from cinema films, a more general validity accrues to his photo- and video-works, which break away from the initial story, from the concrete person.
We follow the trail of restless wanderers, succumb to the attraction of the images and rediscover ourselves in vivid memories. Images and words glide past us like metaphorical sketches, blending into multifaceted narratives while still preserving their schematic character. The borderlines between reality and fiction, past and present, become blurred.

Pablo Pijnappel’s exhibition Homer at the Künstlerhaus Bremen is his first institutional solo-exhibition in Germany.
