Jorge Macchi – 10:51
5 September – 15 November 2009
Opening: Saturday, 4 September 2009, 7 p.m.
Welcoming speech: Barbara Rosengarth, board member
Introduction: Stefanie Böttcher, artistic director
The clock says 9 minutes to 11, it is 10:51. But this precise time designation is deceptive, for the brief moment is extended - by hours, days, weeks. Jorg Macchi has projected the clock at such a high point on the wall that it almost touches the ceiling. The latter in turn weighs down on the clock;s hands causing them to stick in their position. A transient moment is prolonged infinitely and thus the fleeting dimension of time is fixed; it is prevented from passing, mercilessly. The Argentinean artist Jorge Macchi uses different media such as drawing, painting, video or sculpture for his subtle interventions. He transposes everyday phenomena into his own formal idiom and in doing so takes account of the element of the chance. He creates highly poetic representations of the fleeting, which, like the starting material, flow into new open structures.
On the occasion of the exhibition Jorge Macchi – 10:51 and with reference to the work of the same name, he has produced a flip book in which the visual appearance of the dimension of time gradually dissolves.
Jorge Macchi (*1963) lives in Buenos Aires. His works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. In 2005 Macchi provided the Argentinean contribution to the Venice Biennale and in 2010 he will have a solo exhibition at S.M.A.K. in Gent.
